Kamnol Makeover: Big Benefit Enhancements for Amex Platinum Cards

The sun will rise in the west!

Amex, which has been a leader in the premium card market, has been criticized by customers for the past few years for making their card offers more like a coupon book while claiming to improve them.

When rumors started circulating that the annual fee for Amex Platinum cards was going up this year, my first thought was, "Now I'm going to have to send in my Platinum card.

Oh my god, this is blinking.

The offer just got better @.@ It's real @.@

The general consensus is that new benefits will be introduced, existing benefits will be improved to a point where they are actually usable, and you can feel comfortable keeping them until the next update (revamp).

RecommendationsBoth the personal and business cards come with tons of extra perks, making the annual fee well worth it ($895 for both cards).

The $600 FHR credit added to both the personal and business cards is a big plus. Other great perks include $200 for airline (personal + business), $200 for Hilton (business), $300 for lululemon (personal), and $400 for Resy (personal).

In today's post, we'll be discussing enhancements to the Personal Platinum Card® and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

  • Improved benefits
  • New benefits
  • Existing goodies and more

We've broken it down for you.

Please note that benefits like Amex Centurion Lounge access are basic and not covered in detail in today's article.

1. Personal Card: Enhancing existing benefits

1) Hotel booking credit: $300 per half-year (= $600 per year)

First, the most welcome news. The hotel booking credit used to be $200 per year.

You can now earn $300 semi-annually and $600 for a full year.

This credit is applied to the

  • On the AmexTravel page, click
  • Fine Hotels + Resorts® (FHR) for one night or more, or
  • Stay 2 nights at a hotel in the Hotel Collection
  • You can get it if you book with a prepaid rate.

There are quite a few hotels registered as FHR and there are quite a few good ones in Korea, so I think this would be a useful benefit.

2) Online subscription credit: Increased from $20 to $25 per month, including Youtube!

The benefit was previously $20 per month, now $25 per month, a $5 increase.

More importantly, Youtube Premium and Youtube TV are now included!

You don't read the New York Times, Disney, or the Wall Street Journal, but you don't watch YouTube.

I think this is another benefit that you can use right away.

The credit application options are organized by company as follows

  • YouTube Premium, YouTube TV,
  • Disney+, Disney+ bundle, ESPN+, Hulu
  • The New York Times
  • The Wall Street Journal
  • Paramount
  • Peacock

You'll need to pre-register on the Amex site, so keep that in mind.

2. Personal Card: New benefits

There are a lot of great new perks, too.

For your convenience, I've organized them into a table.

BenefitsMaximum amount per yearDetailsCaveats
Resy$400Up to $100 per quarter. When used at Resy, including Resy-affiliated restaurantsLarge cities only; pre-registration required on Amex site
lululemon$300Up to $$75 per quarter (available in-store and online in the U.S.)Excludes outlets + requires pre-registration on Amex site
Uber One Membership$120Up to $120 per year. (Valid on both monthly and annual Uber One membership purchases.)
Oura Ring$200Up to $200 credit per calendar year toward the purchase of a sleep health check ringPre-registration required on Amex site

If you have a lot of Resy partner restaurants in your neighborhood, not to mention the Lululemon $300, it's easy to get a 1 year $400 credit... That's $700 if you get all of these things @.@

In the case of Uber One Membership, we know that some of you have been using Uber Credits for Uber Eats and paying to get a better deal on your deliveries, so this $10 credit is not a lot of money, but we think it will go a long way in helping you maintain your Uber One Membership.

The Oura Ring is a smart device that checks your sleep health in the form of a ring, and I think it's a case of whether you'll use it or not depending on your needs.

3. personal card: keep your existing benefits

What's unique about this offer is that many of the existing benefits have been retained.

It's especially nice to see that Uber and airline credits have been retained.

The $50 Saks semi-annual should be viewed more as a discount coupon than a credit because of the cost of shopping, but it doesn't hurt that it lasts forever.

BenefitsMaximum amount per yearDetailsCaveats
Uber Cash$20015 per month, $35 in DecemberUber Eats delivery, also available for pickup
Airline Free Credit$200Reimbursement for incidental fees like baggage, seat assignments, etc.Amex site requires airline preselection
Saks Fifth Avenue Credit$100Up to $50 semi-annuallyFree shipping threshold is high, so think of it as a discount coupon; requires pre-registration on Amex site
Equinox$300Pre-registration required on Amex site
Walmart 155.40$12.95 per month. Get your Walmart+ membership fee back
CLEAR$209CLEAR+ rebates for expedited security at the airportNote that auto-renewal is the default setting.

4. Business Card: New benefits + enhancements to existing benefits

The Business Card also saw a $200 increase in annual fee to $895, but with new benefits and improvements to existing benefits, there are ways to make up for the annual fee.

1) Hotel booking credit: $300 per half-year (= $600 per year)

First, the most welcome news. It's a new perk.

The hotel credit was previously only available on the personal Platinum card, but we've expanded it to the business card.

This is the same as what we described earlier for personal cards.

That's $600 off the annual fee, even if you only take advantage of these benefits.

2) Earn 2 points

Here's what's great about the existing benefits

That's right, you'll earn 2 points per dollar spent on any specific item + anything over $5,000 at any one time (capped at $2 million in a year)

It used to be 1.5 points per dollar spent over $$5,000, which has been changed to 2 points.

So, if you have a $10,000 lump sum payment to purchase a business need, you'll now earn 20,000 MR points instead of the 15,000 MR points you used to earn.

This is a great benefit for those who spend a lot of money at once.

Certain items also earn 2 points per dollar, including

  • Construction material and hardware suppliers (Construction material and hardware suppliers)
  • Electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers
  • Shipping providers

5. Keep your business card benefits

Business cards used to have some pretty good perks.

We're told these benefits will remain in place as well.

I mean, $200 Hilton, $200 airline, $120 cell phone, those are all things you can get with a little bit of effort.

These alone are $520 a year. That's almost half of the annual fee.

BenefitsMaximum amount per yearDetailsCaveats
Hilton Credit$200Up to $50 per quarter. Hilton stays + restaurant spending at Hilton hotels also appears to be capturedPre-registration required on Amex site
Airline Free Credit$200Reimbursement for incidental fees like baggage, seat assignments, etc.Amex site requires airline preselection
Wireless Credit$12010 per monthAutomatically comes in when you pay your cell phone bill; requires pre-registration on Amex site
CLEAR$209CLEAR+ rebates for expedited security at the airportNote that auto-renewal is the default setting.
Indeed$360Quarterly up to $90Amex site pre-registration required

6. Business Card: Revamping existing benefits

Some existing benefits have been revamped.

1) 35% rebate on Business/First Class tickets, 1 designated airline only

Personally, this is my biggest disappointment.

It used to be that if you used MR points to pay for a business ticket, you'd get 351 TP3T of the MR points used back, regardless of the airline.

For example, if a domestic US first class ticket cost $500 in cash, I would pay with 50,000 MRs for $500 and then get 35% = 17,500 points back. I would actually redeem 32,500 points, giving me a MR point value of 1.5 cents.

It now says that you can only use one airline that you pre-designate to receive the airline fee credit.

Airlines that can be pre-designated are

  • Alaskan / Hawaiian
  • American
  • Delta
  • United
  • Southwest
  • JetBlue (JetBlue)
  • Spirit

These are all US airlines.

So it's no longer possible to get MR points back for a cheap business ticket between Korea and Japan, or to get points back for a business ticket on a US-Korea flight....

2) Dell Credit: $ for $150 for 1 year

Until the first half of this year, Dell purchases were eligible for $200 per semester and $400 per year.

This has changed to $150 for 1 year (pre-registration required)

Of course, we've also added a new benefit, and if you buy a lot of stuff from Dell, you're in for a treat.

If you spend $$5,000 cumulatively on Dell in a year, you'll get $$1,000 back. I was wondering if this meant you had to spend more than $$5,000 at a time, but the terms seem to indicate that you only need to spend $$5,000 cumulatively. (If I'm misinterpreting this, please let me know.)

"an additional $1,000 statement credit after $5,000 in purchases are charged to the Card Account within a calendar year."

So if you're just looking for a way to reduce your annual fee, it's a change for you, but if you're a heavy Dell buyer, it's an improvement.

7. Business Cards: Benefits that aren't always easy to use

Some of the new benefits are difficult to use.

1) What you get after spending $250,000

There are some benefits that are great, but the criteria to get them are overwhelming.

There are two of them: $1,200 Amex Travel Online Flight Credit and $2,400 One AP® Statement Credit.

These benefits are earned by spending $250,000 or more in a calendar year, not the year you achieve them.

  • Up to $$1,200 statement credit toward the purchase of a ticket on AmexTravel in the following year
  • Up to $$2,400 statement credit toward the monthly fee for the Amex payment system called One AP® for the following year.

While this could be a great benefit for bosses who use Amex as their primary card, I have to say that it's not as easy to achieve for those of us who run small businesses.

2) Adobe Credit: $250

And finally, the Adobe $ $250 credit.

If you spend $600 or more on Adobe products on the Adobe US site in a calendar year, you get a $250 credit.

It's a nice perk for those who already pay for Adobe, but forcing people to pay $600 for Adobe just for the perk is a case of navel gazing in most cases.

Pre-registration on the Amex site is required to receive the offer.

8. Precautions for applying for an Amex card

It's worth reminding you of a few caveats when it comes to applying for an Amex card.

1) One signup bonus per card 'for life'

Amex allows you to create separate cards for cards that are considered different products, but with the restriction that you can only get one sign-up bonus "in your lifetime" for the same card.

So if you've had Amex Flats before, or currently have them, this offer is not for you.

2) Amex Personal Card Welcome Bonus

For the Welcome Bonus on the Amex Personal Card, you may see different offers for each individual.

On the offer page, it says "as high as 175K points", which literally means some people will get 175,000 and some people will get 150,000.

Before you apply for the card, you'll see a breakdown of the offers you're eligible for, so be sure to check it out.

Also, some people have reported getting better deals when using referral links or the inconito window, so you might want to consider that as well.

3) Amex Popup

Even if you're new to the flat card, you may have seen a so-called pop-up when you apply for the card, telling you that you may not be eligible for the sign-up bonus.

This means that even if you're approved for the card, you won't be able to sign up, so it's probably best to stop applying for the card if you see the popup.

3) Decline signup bonus?

Amex includes in its terms and conditions that "Amex may decline the sign-up bonus even after you have been approved for the card.

So while Amex's flippers don't happen very often, it's now in the terms and conditions, so it's worth remembering and paying attention to. lol

4) Additional card annual fees

For the Amex Platinum Card, there is a separate and additional annual fee for applying for additional cards.

  • For the Personal Platinum card, each additional card costs $195.
  • For the Business Platinum card, each additional employee card costs $400 (full disclosure)

It's also good to remember this.

Let's wrap up today's post.

There were too many instances of credit cards, airlines, etc. that said they were improving, but in reality, they were just making things worse.

There was a lot of self-help talk that this would be the case with the Amex Platinum card improvements.

There are a lot of great benefits that have been introduced that I didn't expect.

However, these benefits aren't for everyone, and since it's a 100% discount if you don't use it, you'll have to seriously consider whether you want to save the annual fee by not using it, or whether you want to pay the annual fee to get the benefits.

    2. Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access: Spend $75,000.00 in eligible purchases by Dec 31, 2025 to earn unlimited access through Jan 31, 2027. Terms apply.

Is this good enough to care? $It's nice that you can unlock it once and twice at the same time if you spend 75,000 or more, but you can bring a guest to the Centurion Lounge for a few bucks per person, so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

  • You said the AU card is $195, is that a requirement to get AU benefits?
My flat had a bonus offer for AU add ons, either 2K for 6 months or 3 months, with a spending requirement,
When I tried to get an AU, I was presented with two options: a card with an annual fee or a card without an annual fee.
I thought the no annual fee card was the old Gold card.
Well, there was a comparison of the two card options on the application form, but I didn't realize it.
There seemed to be a gap in some of the benefits
I went with the no annual fee because all I had to do was fill in my spending,
AU also seems to have different benefits depending on the card, so if you can summarize this as well, it would be helpful for others.
Wouldn't that help? Can I leave it to Mamo to tell you that?

I didn't apply for a spouse card because of the caveat "$195 for each additional card", but after reading this comment, I realized that there are two types of additional cards.
      - Additional Platinum Card® from American Express: This is a separate annual fee of $195 and is available for
      - Companion Platinum Card® from American Express: This has no annual fee.

I understand from the page[1] Global Entry, TSA PreCheck benefit description for the second additional card that the additional member also gets a $120 statement credit every 4 years separately. Is this how it's always been? I'm new to the Amex Platinum card so this seems like a pretty good benefit.

It looks like the additional card users with no annual fee also get Global Entry, TSA benefits, and up to 4 additional Companion cards, and if you use them all, you get an additional $480 statement credit for 4 years, am I understanding correctly?

          Reply
          • That's how I understand it too. However, in the case of Global Entry/TSA fee credit, it's a benefit that all cards with an annual fee have anyway, and it's not a benefit that you will use every year, so I think it's not enough to be a decisive factor in applying for an AU card. AU cards also count toward Chase's 5/24 and require a cumbersome process to remove, so for those who are very concerned about 5/24, it's common to avoid applying for AU unless you absolutely have to.

Ah, I was only thinking about the lack of an annual fee for the additional card, not the opportunity cost of the 5/24. Thanks for the clarification.

              Reply
    • Yeah. I'll do that, and now that I've looked it up, there's no Centurion Lounge access, Delta Lounge access, or anything like that, but it does seem to share some credit with the main membership, so that's a nice benefit.

In particular, the $600 hotel credit share is new to me, and I think it's a great perk.

(Update: Upon further reading, it appears that while we share the $600 hotel credit, we only have access to Hotel Collection bookings and still don't have FHR access - you'd have to be an additional card member paying an annual fee to get exclusive FHR bookings).

Today, if you flat upgrade Imelo Gold, it whispers that it gives 125k. It's not 175 150, but 125k if it's a small one, but I'm thinking about it. If you spend 6 gallons 6 thousand, it's wide...

Does this upgrade work the same for Hardpool and Chase 5/24? What's the difference between a new card and an upgrade... ;)

          2. for Amex, I believe there is no hard pool for existing member upgrades, but I'm not sure.

          3. I don't think this would be the case for Chase 5/24 as it would carry over the existing card's history, but again, do this at your own risk.

And if you do the upgrade before making a new card, you won't get the signup bonus on the new card unless it's NLL. I'm in the same situation because it's popup hell trying to apply for a new card.

      • After upgrading, can I open a new flat later and still get signups?
I'm still a beginner, so I don't know much... ㅠㅠ

        • If you upgrade before new, you won't get new signups later (NLL is the exception). I've never applied as a flat new, but with the amex popup hell + I don't think I'll ever have more than 125k signups even if I get through the popup, plus I have to manage +5/24, so I just opted for an upgrade.

        • As Lux replied, your post counts as having the Platinum card, so in principle, you would not receive the new Platinum card welcome bonus afterward.

However, there are often NLL offers that don't have such restrictions, so I don't think it's a complete no-no.

  • Wow, the new Amex Platinum looks better than I thought it would.
I have the Amex Gold now, but the 100,000 point upgrade offer just came out, and I'm torn.

    1. is the Gold -> Platinum upgrade worth 100,000 points?
    2. amex gold renewal $325 was paid recently, will I have to pay the full $895 if I upgrade?

    • 1. it says 125,000, but 100,000 doesn't seem too bad.

      2. you'll probably get some of your old dues back and be charged a new annual fee.

I'm calling the police and tracing your IP, don't hang up" but they hung up on me right away...lol I'm so grateful to MileMoa for all the help they give me.

Do you usually close the card after spending $8000 in 6 months for points only?
The annual fee for the Platinum card is quite high at $895.

    Reply
    • You can often cancel or downgrade to another product after 12 months, but you have to keep it for at least a year. If you close the card before the one-year mark, you may be able to keep the welcome bonus (I can't find the exact terms right now).

I was applying because I thought it wouldn't be hard to fill up my spending before my trip.
I just closed it because the signup bonus was 80k lol bummer

Gold is a 10k bonus for 6 months $6,000 spend, is this worth it? I ask because I don't really know the value of Amex points lol

  • Apply for the Fleet Card today and you'll get airline hotel credit on your
    Once between October and December
    Once between January and June
Can I get it three times a year, once from June to September?

    Reply
    • Airfare is paid on a calendar year basis, so if you spend $200 this October or December, you'll get another $200 next year.

For hotel FHR credits, it looks like you'll get $300 in October-December this year, $300 in the first half of next year, and another $300 in July-September.

  • I've been using Gold for about 7 years, but I thought it was time to send it, so I was wondering if I should get rid of the card or upgrade to flat, so it was upgraded just in time ... ㅎㅎ Plus, 125k came out as an upgrade bonus, so I upgraded right yesterday... But what's weird is that I called to inquire because my old Gold had about two months left until the next annual fee month, but they said that the maximum upgrade bonus was 100K? So I just said, I'll upgrade myself~ and applied for the upgrade right during the call lol I'm looking forward to the mirror version card coming out next week.

    Reply
    • I'm sorry you're torn, but if you can use the Amex flat offer to your advantage, I think it's not a bad idea to skip it, and if you don't get the Gold Welcome Bonus, you can always look for a flat NLL offer later.

  • Do you know when the hotel credit quarterly resets?
If I apply now, get it and use it right away, will it be available again next January...?
And can you tell me what the difference is between Charles Schwab Platinum and regular Platinum?
    Thank you

    Reply
    • 1. I think it will reset on 1/1 and 7/1 each year, so if you get the card now, you'll definitely be able to use it again next January, and I think you'll be able to use it again early next July.

      2. the Schwab Flat Card is a card that Schwab members can sign up for, which has the same basic benefits, but I understand that you get a certain amount of the Annual Schwab Appreciation Bonus based on how much you invest with Schwab ($250,000 to $1 million invested is $100 a year). It used to be that it was counted separately from the regular Amex card so you could stack the welcome bonuses, but I understand that the rules changed a few years ago and this is no longer possible.

    • It's not exactly 175,000. It can be as high as 175,000 depending on the individual, so you'll have to put in your information and check the welcome offer before proceeding.

  • hello. Thanks for the great articles as always!
I recently received an 80,000 point offer for the Amex Gold Card with a personal RSVP code, but when I checked the Platinum personal welcome offer online, I saw 80,000 points. This seems too low... If I cancel and reapply, is there any chance my welcome offer will go up? Or is it worth contacting Amex to see if they can increase it?

  • I applied for the Amex Platinum and was offered 50,000 points ($12,000 for 6 months) as a signup bonus. I've been using Amex for 10 years and have one Hilton Amex, but 50,000 is a bit too much... Is it possible to delink it and ask AMEX to chat with me to get the offer?

And please add me to your email list! Thank you!
