Sapphire Preferred, Venture, and Venture X: comparisons

Updated 01.21.2025

The Venture X card will no longer be eligible for complimentary access to Plaza Premium Group lounges starting in March 2025. However, many of these lounges are still accessible with the Priority Pass card, so it's worth noting.

Updated 09.16.2023

$The way the $300 credit will be used has changed: it will no longer be redeemed as a reimbursement, but as a discount coupon to book travel on the Capone site. We hope you're not confused.

The Sharp 80,000 online offer will end on May 31st. If you were planning to apply for the 80,000 offer, you'd better hurry.

=====

Capital One has been on a roll lately, after launching the wildly popular Venture X card late last year.

This time around, the regular Venture card, which is a lower-end version of the Venture X card, has launched a $7.50 promotion.

The regular Venture card is a $95 annual fee card that competes directly with Chase's Sapphire Preferred Card, and while this bonus of 75,000 miles falls short of the card's highest sign-up bonus ever of 100,000 miles, I'd say this offer with $4,000 in spending is a pretty good deal considering the previous offer had a $20,000 spending requirement.

In today's post, we'll compare the features of the Venture card to the Sapphire Preferred Card and the Venture X card, the higher-end version of the Venture, item by item. in the following example.

All three of these cards are cards you should have in your arsenal for the long term, but I hope this helps you decide which one to build first.

Detailed card information
Venture X Card7.5K 'miles' sign-up bonus after spending $4K in 3 months
Detailed card information

1. signup bonus: Sharp

First, if you look at the absolute signup bonus alone, the Sharp card wins.

  • The Sharp card currently gets 80,000 Chase points, which is Chase's own points, as a sign-up bonus.
  • By comparison, the Venture card earns "miles," Capital One's own loyalty system, and only 7.5 percent is a sign-up bonus.
  • The same is true for Venture X, where you'll receive 70,000 "miles" as a signup bonus.

Think of it in terms of cash value,

  • The Sharp card is worth 80,000 UR points = $800 cash, and the same 80,000 points are worth $1,000 when redeemed for travel on the UR travel site.
  • The Venture card is worth half the value of your points if you cash them in directly, but if you redeem them for travel expenses like hotels, airlines, etc. and then get them reimbursed through a feature called Cover Your Travel Purchases, you'll get 7.5k = $750 value.
  • For Venture X, it's the same as for Venture: 7.5k = $750 value.

Of course, both UR points and Capital One "miles" are also convertible to airline miles, so the value of signing up may be even greater.

2. spending: $4,000 on all 3 cards equally

No matter how good the signup bonus is, if the spending requirements are overwhelming, the offer is just an offer.

The current spending requirements are the same for all three cards.

  • Sharp requires 3 months and $4,000 from the date of card approval.
  • Venture is also a 3-month, $4,000 term based on the date of card approval (account opening).
  • For the Venture X card, the current requirement is $4,000 in 3 months. Considering that when the card launched, the sign-up bonus was $100,000, but the spending requirement was also quite high at $10,000 over 6 months, I'd say the Venture X's current spending requirement is pretty good.
3. annual fee: In terms of actual annual fees, Venture X

We believe that the annual fee can be calculated separately as the nominal annual fee and the actual annual fee, which is what remains after subtracting the benefits that are actually available.

For example, the Venture X card has a very high annual fee of $395 for the first year, but you can earn $300 back each year on bookings on the Capital One Travel site, bringing the effective annual fee down to $95. Add to that the 10,000 "miles" bonus you get when you renew the card, and the annual fee is effectively zero.

If you do the math, the effective annual fee for each of these cards would be

  • The Sharp card has a nominal annual fee of $95, but if you factor in the $$50 hotel booking credit that you get each year for membership, the effective annual fee drops to $45. (The $$50 credit is for hotel bookings made using the Sharp card on Chase's travel booking site, Ultimate Rewards.)
  • The Venture card has a nominal annual fee of $95. Unfortunately, the Venture card doesn't come with a credit for hotel bookings like the Sharp. You can get a $100 rebate on the Global Entry/TSA Precheck application fee, but it's only available once every four years, so it's unlikely to lower the actual annual fee.
  • The Venture X card has a nominal annual fee of $395. However, when you factor in the $300 credit + 10,000 "miles" bonus each year, as mentioned earlier, I think it's safe to say that the actual annual fee is zero.
4. Points redemption partner: Sharp

The Sharp card earns UR points, which are Chase's own points, while the Venture and Venture X earn "miles," which are Capital One's own points.

All three of these cards have a Dorrance feature that allows you to transfer points to airline miles or hotel points.

I still think Chase UR points are a little better in this regard.

  • I think the Sharp card is better for two main reasons. There are two main reasons why I think the Sharp card is better: the 1:1 conversion to Hyatt points, which are the most valuable hotel points, and the fact that United is a 1:1 conversion partner, which makes it easier to get flights to Korea and the mileage redemption rate is reasonable.
  • Venture and Venture X have the advantage of being able to convert 1:1 to your favorite airline miles, such as Aeroplan and Lifemiles, and include the world's top three airline alliances. However, the weaknesses are the lack of the big three US airlines - United, Delta, and American - and the lack of decent hotel partners.
5. the value of points when buying a ticket or booking a hotel: Sharp

While the best way to maximize the value of your miles and points is to fly business or first class, this option isn't always possible.

Then there are times when you need to use points like cash to buy a flight or book a hotel, in which case the Sharp card is a better option.

  • First, for Sharp, you can book flights, hotels, and more through the Chase UR travel portal, which is worth 1 UR point = 1.25 cents.
  • For Venture or Venture X, you can similarly book airline tickets, hotels, etc. on their own travel portal, Capital One Travel, where the value of 1 'mile' = 1 cent.

As you can see in the image below, the Shilla Hotel in Seoul costs $220 per night, but you can book it for 22,048 points.

6. ease of use when booking airline tickets, hotels: Venture = Venture X

As I just said, if you redeem points for airline and hotel bookings through their own portal, I'd say the value of the Sharp card is better than Capital One 'miles' at 1 point = 1.25 cents.

However, it's hard to say that sharp cards are always better.

There are two reasons for this: the basic earning rate is different depending on how much you spend on the card, and there are differences in how you book flights and hotels.

We'll cover the default earning rate in #7 below, but here in #6, we'll explain the difference between booking airline tickets and hotels.

  • For the Sharp card, you must book through the Chase Travel Portal to get the value of 1 point = 1.25 cents.
  • Venture and Venture X work differently. You can book through the Capital One travel portal, but you can also book and pay directly on the airline or hotel's public website and then redeem points in reverse.

The fact that this reverse approach is possible can make a more significant difference than you might think.

1) First of all, for hotels, you can only get elite benefits like upgrades and points if you book on AirHome. The downside is that the Chase Travel Portal is considered a third-party travel agency and therefore doesn't have any elite status benefits.

2) In the case of airlines, there is no explicit discrimination based on the booking channel. However, if you need to change your ticket due to a schedule change, there is a huge difference between a ticket booked directly on GongHome and a ticket booked through a travel agency.

There have been a lot of cancelations lately, so there are a lot of examples on the message boards, and I'd like to share with you a recent example of the Posts about itinerary changes due to Aero Mexico flight cancellationsand I think you'll see what I mean by that.

In that regard, I would have to say that the Venture and Venture X cards are better in this regard because you can make reservations on the official websites of hotels and airlines, and then redeem points in a reverse format.

7. daily life earnings: Venture = Venture X

You're basically collecting miles as a sign-up bonus, but that doesn't mean you can completely ignore earning miles based on how much you spend each month.

In that regard, the For everyday spending, the Venture = Venture X card is a better choice with a guaranteed base 2 points per dollar spentfor example.

  • First of all, Sharp has a basic 1 point per dollar earning rate. In addition, there is a "10% Anniversary Point Bonus" where you get 10% worth of points for every point you earn in a year when you renew your card. So if you spend $10,000 and earn 10,000 points, you'll get an additional 1,000 points when you renew your card. From that perspective, I think it's safe to say that Sharp's base earning rate is 1.1 UR points per $1. In addition, dining, Online For grocery shopping, you'll earn a total of 3 points per dollar (plus 2 extra points).
  • For Venture, the default earning is 2 miles per dollar. Of course, the "miles" here are Capital One's own unit of points, not airline miles, which are guaranteed to be worth 1 "mile" = 1 cent when redeemed for travel expenses as mentioned earlier, so the default earning rate for Venture is 2 "miles" = 2 cents per dollar.
  • Like the Venture, the Venture X has a base earning rate of 2 "miles" per dollar. Venture X doesn't earn extra miles for spending at restaurants, grocery stores, etc., but it says you'll earn 10 miles per dollar when you book hotels and car rentals on the Capital One travel portal.
8. lounge benefits: Venture X

Based on airport lounge benefits alone, the Venture X card wins out over the premium card.

  • As for the Sharp card, there are no airport lounges that you can enter at this time. Chase's own lounge, the Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club, is currently in the process of opening and is said to be coming to LGA, BOS, SAN, and PHX in the US, but there's no word yet on who will be able to enter and how many times.
  • For Venture cards Capital One Loungefor free up to two times per year. After the third time, you'll have to pay a $45 admission fee.
  • The Venture X card allows unlimited access to the Capital One Lounge for two guests (3 total), with no limit on the number of times you can enter. In addition, you'll also receive You can also get a Priority Pass card for free. The Priority Pass card benefits are also available to family members (authorized users) who can add up to four additional cards in their name for no additional annual fee, so I think it's safe to say that the Venture X card is one of the best cards out there when it comes to lounge benefits.

[Update 01.21.2025] As of March 2025, the Venture X card will no longer be eligible for complimentary access to Plaza Premium Group lounges. However, many of these lounges are still accessible with the Priority Pass card, so keep that in mind.

9. Insurance when renting a car: Sharp = Venture X

If you pay with a credit card when renting a car, you can decline the car insurance called CDW / LDW. This is usually 22-3 dollars a day, so it's a pretty big savings.

At this point, it is important to note whether this CDW/LDW coverage is primary or secondary.

Primary means that even if you have your own auto insurance, the credit card's CDW/LDW coverage will apply first. Secondary is the idea that if you have your own auto insurance, it will be used first, and the credit card's coverage will only take care of things like deductibles that aren't covered.

That's why it's generally accepted that primary coverage is much better if possible.

10. cell phone insurance: Venture X

With cell phones being so expensive, it seems like the trend these days is for good cards to add cell phone insurance (though this isn't necessarily a feature that's only available on high annual fee cards).

The three cards we're comparing today are also quite different in this regard.

  • First, there is no separate cell phone insurance for the Sharp Card.
  • Not even for Venture cards.
  • Only the Visa Infinite version of the Venture X card includes cell phone insurance, and you'll need to pay your monthly phone bill with the card to take advantage of this coverage.
11. Issuance difficulty?

Now, it doesn't matter how good the card is if you can't get it issued, right?

In that regard, each of these cards has its own strengths and weaknesses.

  • The Sharp card is a Chase card, so you'll need to check for 5/24 when you apply for the card, and since it's a personal card, if you're approved, it will count towards your 5/24. If you've gotten this card in the past, there's also a restriction that you have to wait 48 months from the date you got the signup bonus on any of the Sapphire family cards before you can get a new signup bonus.
  • The Venture card and Venture X card are Capital One cards, so there is a disadvantage that all three credit bureaus pull your credit history when you apply for the card. However, in terms of issuance difficulty, I would say that it is difficult to predict (at least in terms of Venture X). There are cases where people who think they should be approved are rejected, and there are cases where people who think 'approval is not easy' are lightly approved, so I think we need to see the situation a little more.

Let's wrap up today's post.

The Sharp, Venture, and Venture X cards are all great cards, and I don't think you'll regret your choice.

However, I think card utilization will vary greatly depending on travel patterns, spending patterns, where you live, etc.

For example, if you have a Capital One Cafe right next to your home or work and you can get a 50% discount on your coffee every day, I think the Capital One card could be a must-have.

If you don't mind the initial annual fee but want to give each Priority Pass card to a family member in Korea, the Venture X card is probably the best option.

So I think it's important to carefully consider whether the benefits I've described today are something you need directly, or something you're likely to use once in a year or so before making a decision.

  • Thanks for the comparison. I actually created a venture x family card for my family going to Korea, will this (family card) also cover primary insurance when we rent a car in Korea?

    Reply
    • 1. (This is at your own risk) As far as I know, this is possible. My understanding is that the reservation must be in your family member's name and you must use their Venture X card.
"You are eligible for this benefit if Your name is embossed on an eligible card issued in the United States and You use it to initiate and complete Your entire car rental transaction. Only You as the primary car renter and any additional drivers permitted by the Rental Car Agreement are covered."

      2. The covered rental period is 15 days for residence and 31 days for non-residence. Depending on where your family lives in Korea, you may need to pay attention to this part.
"Rental periods of fifteen (15) consecutive days within Your country of residence, and thirty-one (31) consecutive days outside it, are both covered."

  • The value per 1 "mile" you are referring to here is = 1 "cent". not 1 "dollar", right?

    Reply
    • I think the part you're referring to is the part of the text that says "For Venture or Venture X, you can book airline tickets, hotels, etc. similarly on their own travel portal, Capital One Travel, where the value per 1 'mile' is = 1 cent".

      As you can see in the image, it takes 22,000 'miles' to book a $220 hotel, so I think the value per 1 'mile' is 1 cent, because if this is $1, then 22,000 'miles' should be worth $22,000 ;);

I've had the Sapphire Preferred card for 8 years and I'm thinking of churning it...can I downgrade it over the phone and then wait a month and apply to get the miles back? I'm not sure if I understand correctly. I asked my banker and he said I can churn 48 months after downgrading, but I thought I read on Milemoa that I can churn a month later.
And what card should I ask them to downgrade to? Thanks for all the great information.

    Reply
    • 1. usually a downgrade and 1-2 weeks should be sufficient.

      2. the person who said 48 months after downgrade is incorrect - 48 months is after you receive the sign-up bonus, not 48 months from the last day you had the card.

      3. Downgrading to the Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited seems to be a popular choice. The difference is that the Flex card is the Mastercard version, so the card number changes, and the Unlimited is the same Visa card, so you can keep the same number. However, the regular Sapphire card is considered the same Sapphire family card, so I think you only need to avoid this card.

I've gotten a lot of good information on Milemoa and from the links you've given me, I've made UnBullcard, IHG card, Sharp, Venture x card and am using them so well. I also wanted to open Amex Flat or Gold by referral, but I didn't find a separate link from Milemoa, so I wanted to make it a link to the members who are helping me a lot, but I'm not a member, so when I click on the member information on the board, I only see two options, "View post" and "View comment", so I couldn't use the referral link.
I'm going to Korea for the first time in 6 years, so I'm booking InterContinental and Hilton, and in Jeju Island, I'm going to stay at the Jeju Grand Hyatt by transferring points from Sharp to Hyatt. I'm so grateful for the miles I've accumulated over the years. However, I saw on the board that Hyatt has a GOH service, and members have graciously booked GOH for other members. I'm not a member yet, but I didn't find a way to ask if I can ask for a GOH favor, is there any way to ask?
    Thank you!!!

    Reply
    • Answer. I'm told it's automatic when you book a hotel on the UR site, you pay for the hotel, and then it comes in as a statement credit afterward.

"A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for hotel accommodation purchases made through the Ultimate Rewards program, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50."

I'm not sure how reimbursement works, even though I've looked it up, so can you tell me what the process is after purchase? I'm trying to buy from Korean Air at Lee Wang Branch because the ticket price is the same on Capital Portal and Korean Air.

    Reply
    • We understand that you can do this in the following way

      1. When you pay with your card on the Korean Air site, the amount will appear on the Capital One site after some time.
      2. then click "View Rewards" to enter the redemption page.
      3. then select the "Cover Travel Purchase" option, but it will automatically bring up the corresponding item that you can reverse by deducting points.
      4. I know you can choose how many points you want to spend there.

It's worth noting that you can only redeem points within 90 days of the card payment date, so it's worth remembering the 90-day date.

      • Yeah... thepointsguy says something along the same lines: "While this isn't a hard-and-fast rule like some other issuers use, it means that you may not be able to get the bonus on the Venture card if you've had it in the past, even if you didn't earn a bonus at the time." I like the travel category reimbursement because it's so versatile, but YMMV, I'm not sure I'd want to spend hard and not get it.

  • The last time a 100K Venture X deal came out, you wrote about the Hertz elite status benefits. Is this Hertz benefit the same for the 75K Venture X this time around? One more question... Am I correct in understanding that this Hertz offer is essentially a free upgrade, i.e., you can rent a compact car for the price of a midsize car, or a large car for the price of a midsize car?

    Reply
    • 1. Yes. Hertz elite status is a standard benefit of Venture X, so it's not tied to the sign-up bonus amount.

      2. basically yes, but there may be some restrictions, such as only available at Hertz locations, like airports, and certain car classes are excluded, so you'll need to consider that.

I'll explain in detail in a separate post later, but basically, you pay with your card on a public website or travel agency site, and when the amount is posted on the card's homepage, you use points to clear the amount. You can think of it as redeeming and reimbursing first.

Can I get an email reminder to sign up too?
    Thank you

  • Thank you. I used your link and got the inheritance ^^ My credit score is in the 830s and when I checked my credit karma, equifax showed a hard inquiry and a 2 point drop almost immediately. transunion showed no change.

  • Does redeeming with Capital one miles work for any airline or hotel? I'm very curious lol

    Reply
    • As long as you code the individual airline hotel as a travel item, it seems to work fine.

"Purchases made from airlines, hotels, rail lines, car rental agencies, limousine services, bus lines, cruise lines, taxi cabs, travel agents and time shares are generally considered to be travel purchases, and availability for redemption is based on the merchant category code assigned to them by the merchant."

  • I just got my venture x mermaid from your link a while back. It says it takes 3 days for the card to come, but is there any way I can get the card number in advance? I'm going to use it for online shopping.

    • When I download the card app and look at the card number field, it says instant number, but it doesn't work for everyone.

      • It's a small question, but thank you for your kind response. I'll give it a try, and I see that my credit score is down 3 points.

  • Thanks to Mamo, I made a PP card after venture x approval and got bonus miles well. I also booked a hotel through capital one travel site, but suddenly I checked the sale price on gonghome and called them and they said they will give me back 63.50 for 2 nights. I know it's up to $50 but the first agent said it was over $50 so I transferred it to a supervisor and they said they would approve it. I'm not a member yet so I couldn't post on the board, but I thought I'd leave it here in case it helps others. I might be lucky and get more than $50, so I hope you don't feel bad if you don't get it.

  • Thanks to Mamo, I always learn good information!!!
I'm planning a trip abroad and I'm looking for a card that I can use both to avoid foreign transaction fees and also to get a good deal...I'd like to ask for your opinion...I think I'll use it for a few years before downgrading while filling up my spending after the trip. (I'm still a beginner so I don't have many cards)
The two cards I'm considering right now are Sharp and Venture X... but I'm worried because I don't think the signup bonus is great for both cards right now... especially Venture X. I think I read that once you get the signup bonus, you can't get it for the next card, so I'm wondering if it's better to wait... (am I wrong?)
So I'm wondering if it's better to rush and get one... or wait for a better signup bonus... and if you have any recommendations for a beginner like me.

    • Ah, I'm sure you're torn, but seeing how hard Chase is running these days, I wonder if the Sharp signup bonus will go up once or twice, but this is just a feeling ;; If I miss it, the signup bonus is a bit disappointing, but I think VentureX could be a choice.

It's a hefty annual fee, but what about Sari? It's not a bad choice, with the option to downgrade to something like Freedom after a year of good use.

      • I sharply check once in a while, but it's still...
If Shari's annual fee was the same as Venture X, I'd sign up right away, but when I compared them, I'm not sure how much I'd get for the annual fee... I'll have to look into it again. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

      • Can I ask one more question in hindsight?
What do you think of Shari vs Apples (vs Venturex?)? I don't have to worry about 5/24 and I'm not planning to run in the future, so Apples is also visible... If it's 150k MR, I'm not sure how it compares to Shari 80k UR. I think that easy-to-use points are always UR, so I don't know what the value of MR is for beginners like me...

        • MR is also a good value. If you switch to ANA, you can do a US-Korea business roundtrip for 9.5k miles, but the seats are drying up and the fuel surcharges have only made it less popular.

There are a lot of benefits that are like coupons that need to be used, and if you can get them all, I think 150k is a great deal.

  • VentureX Reverse is very tempting. Is it only available for AirHome (airline/hotel), Booking.com and Airbnb? I don't see it no matter how much I look...

  • Is it correct to say that if there is no VentureX offer in the PRE-APPROVE, it will be rejected? Thanks for the information... It's a shame.

    • Just as having a pre-approve doesn't necessarily guarantee approval, not having a pre-approve doesn't necessarily mean reject.

  • I'm doing well with VentureX and I'm waiting to apply for Sharp if they have a good offer.
And I'm still waiting to sign up. Remind me to email you...!
I wish I had found Milemoa sooner... Thanks for all the great information!

  • Thank you for always organizing good information so neatly, I enjoy reading it.
    I have a question...
In the case of Venture X, the annual travel reward of $300 will be carried over to the next year if not used... Do you do it?
I don't think it will work, but... I looked it up on GongHome just in case, but there doesn't seem to be any relevant information.
    Thank you!

  • I'm going to apply for a Venture X thanks to you, hopefully it will be a good one ^^.
Hey Mamo, is it possible for me to get an email reminder when I sign up?
Thanks as always for the great information!

  • Thanks for the great information as always.
Based on the above, I don't see any reason to create a generic venture instead of Venture X. Are there any situations where a default venture card is recommended (e.g., difficulty of issuance, etc.)?
I'm also wondering if it's a safe card to get as an F-1 student, assuming my credit score is acceptable. As far as I know, I only need to avoid business cards, but am I missing something?

Also, could you please add me to your email list for reminders when the next signup opens?
    Thank you as always.

    • 1. Yes. If you absolutely have to make one or the other, there's really no reason to make the regular Venture rather than Venture X. Assuming the signup bonus is the same. However, in the long run, you'll probably want to make both cards, so it's good to know the basics.

      2. yes. Added.

  • Hi, I was wondering if there are any cards that include travel insurance in addition to rental car insurance? I'm thinking of getting one for a trip to Europe.

    Reply
    • You said travel insurance, but there are different coverage conditions for each card, such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, and baggage insurance, and the conditions under which the insurance is valid for each card are different. For example, some cards require a round-trip ticket (one-way-one-way combination) as a prerequisite, while others require only a portion of the travel expenses to be paid with the card, and others cover mileage redemption, but only the type of mileage redemption that can be earned with the card.

I personally prefer the Amex Flatcard, but as I mentioned, there are a lot of conditions, so it's best to read the terms and conditions of the card carefully, including reviews on message boards.

  • I have a lot of money to spend these days, and I don't want to let it go to waste, so I've been looking around. Do you have any personal cards that you would recommend considering the annual fee? I'm really sad that Chase Sapphire points ended a while ago.
I see in the comments above that everyone is asking for reminder emails, but what are the benefits of being a member? I'm not a member, just a viewer, but I've always appreciated the information.
I was wondering if you could put me on your reminder email list too 😅.

    • There's a leaked link to the Capital One Venture X card on the bulletin board for personal cards, but it's also available as a regular refund offer, so you'll have to wait a while.

A member is a board member, which gives you the ability to post questions and comments on the board.

      I'll write down the email.

  • Hello, I've found the message boards to be very helpful in planning my travels. I've gotten some great deals on airline/hotel cards and have gotten some great sign up bonuses, so I'll be able to use them well this spring break and summer. Thank you. I'm commenting here because I've been watching for a couple months to see when the announcement about signing up is coming up, and now I realize I'm supposed to leave an email reminder as a comment. Reminders, please.

  • hello.
I'm thinking of booking a rental car using the Venture X $300 credit on Capital One Travel's website for my upcoming trip to Hawaii. Will the CDW/LDW primary cover that comes with this card still apply if I use the $300 credit? (For example, if I use the $300 credit and pay $200 for a rental car totaling about $500, will the car insurance on the card still apply?)
