처가 작년에 기획, 감독하기 시작해 올해 초 완성 공개한 다큐멘터리 영화(25분)입니다.

 

제가 사는 오하이오 데이턴(Dayton, OH)의 초원과 그 초원의 생태계를 지키기 위해 헌신한 한 생물학자의 이야기를 통해 본 '환경 다큐멘터리'입니다. 그 중 한 초원은 한때 라이트 형제(Wright brothers)가 비행 연습을 했던 허프먼초원(Huffman Prairie)입니다. 지금은 지역 유적지로 보호하고 있습니다.

Fire, Rain, Wind, Snow, and Fire: The Story of a Prairie (2016)

 

"This documentary provides viewers with knowledge about the unique ecosystems of Ohio prairies and the importance of these preserved and restored natural environments. Accordingly, its focus is on the famed Huffman Prairie outside of Dayton, Ohio and the Brother Don Geiger Prairie the restored prairie at Marianist Nature Preserve at Mount St. John in Beavercreek, OH. 

 

The documentary film provides close-ups of living organisms in the tall grass prairie and examines the special historical connections of these natural environments. 

At the same time, this documentary is my act of bringing art and spirituality together in a form of Wabi-Sabi aesthetic. Wabi-Sabi, a manifestation of Zen Buddhist thought, urges us to find beauty in the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. By looking to this aesthetic, I wish to produce in this documentary a meditation on the beautiful in nature and on those moments when that nature becomes potentially an imperfect and precarious context for the ambitions of humans."

 

처음 만든 작품이라 그런지 제가 봐도 좀 매끄럽지 못한 부분이 보이긴 합니다만, 기록할 만한 지역 유적지와 인물을 담아 보존했다는 의미와 함께 풍경을 자연스럽게 담은 걸로 저는 후한 점수를 쳐 줬습니다. 

 

혹 오하이오주 데이턴을 여행하시면서 '공군박물관'을 방문하신다면 그 옆에 있는 허프먼초원도 꼭 한번 가 보셔서 이런 의미를 새겨보시길 권합니다.

힘들게 만들었는데 공개 당시만 주위에서 화제가 되고 잊혀지는 것 같습니다. 

이왕 만든 거 두루 보는게 좋겠다 싶었습니다.

안내나 홍보의 성격이 강한데 해당 분류가 없어 자랑에 넣었습니다.

그렇게 분류하고 보니 솜씨 좋은 아내 자랑이 맞는 것도 같고요.

25분, 짧지 않지만 노동절 연휴라면 짧아 보일수도 있으리라 짐작합니다. 

 

제 경우 듣기만 해선 전부 이해할 수가 없습니다. 

그래서 모든 말을 옮겨 적은 스크립트를 읽었습니다

제가 자막을 넣어 주겠다고 하고선 방법을 몰라 못했네요.
