Once considered the world standard for smog-filled cities, China has managed to clean up its act of late, at least relative to India.

 

 

 

In a new survey by Air Visual of the world(? 아무리 찾아도 이런 기관은 없는데)’s most polluted cities in 2018, only two Chinese cities rank in the top 20 and just five in the top 30. That’s compared to India with 15 cities in the top 20 and 22 in the top 30.

According to the survery, the most polluted city in China is Hotan in Xinjiang, ranking 8th overall. Next comes Kashgar at 19. Most of the remaining Chinese cities in the top 50 are in Henan and Hebei provinces.

 

 

 

 

Meanwhile, incredibly enough, China ranks as just the 12th most polluted country by average in 2018, placing ahead of Indonesia but behind Uganda. Its average score is even termed as “unhealthy for sensitive groups” rather than just “unhealthy.”

 

 

 

This achievement comes as the Chinese government has emphasized cleaning up its infamously toxic air. Nowhere has this effort been more apparent than in Beijing where “smog squads” and coal-fired power plant shut-downs has seen the city plummet all the way down to the world’s 122nd most polluted city on this latest list.
